Highlvl Underwater Robots in Aquaculture

Overview

Aquaculture net pen inspection solutions: Aquaculture supplies a large share of the world’s protein and China is the world’s largest producer. Traditional farming has long relied on human judgement, with too little insight into the underwater environment, stock condition and facility safety. Net damage, declining water quality, low bottom oxygen and disease outbreaks are often detected late, causing heavy losses. Diver inspection is slow, costly and risky, and cannot meet the fine-grained management that large-scale, intensive farms need.

As the underwater farm steward, the ROV enters the farming water to survey the environment, inspect structures, observe stock and assess the seabed, turning the underwater farm from a black box into a transparent operation and moving aquaculture from experience and luck to data-driven precision farming.

Core application scenarios

1. Structural safety inspection of farm cages

Cage frames, nets and mooring systems are the physical barrier of the farm and endure waves, current, typhoons and biofouling, so frames corrode and break, nets tear and mooring ropes loosen and wear. The ROV sweeps systematically along the cage bottom and sides, using HD cameras to find holes, broken netting and frame deformation, and checks mooring connections and rope wear, catching problems before typhoon and harvest seasons to prevent escapes and facility loss.

2. Observing stock condition underwater

Feeding behaviour, swimming and skin condition directly reflect growth quality and disease risk. The ROV hovers inside the cage to observe fish closely without disturbing the shoal, recording density, feeding activity, parasites, lesions or abnormal pigmentation; with AI image recognition it estimates numbers and length distribution, giving direct input for feeding strategy and early disease warning.

3. Monitoring the farming water environment

Dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, turbidity and pH determine survival and growth. With multi-parameter water quality sensors the ROV profiles different layers and locations in the cage, drawing three-dimensional water quality maps that reveal local hypoxic zones, thermoclines and pollutant accumulation, and tracks trends against historical data to inform aerator operation, water exchange and feeding adjustments.

4. Sediment and seabed assessment

Uneaten feed and faeces accumulating in ponds, RAS tanks and around cages degrade the bottom, release hydrogen sulphide and breed pathogens. The ROV films and samples sediment on the pond floor or below the cage to assess colour, thickness, organic content and black-odour severity, verifies dredging results and guides sediment improvement and production-cycle planning, reducing the risk of sediment-related disease.

5. Evaluating feed performance

Precise feeding is central to cutting feed cost and pollution. The ROV dives during and after feeding to record how pellets sink and disperse and how the fish respond, identifying feed wasted on the bottom or uneven feeding, and combines this with feeding data to refine timing and quantity, improving feed conversion and reducing the nutrient load on the water.

6. Support for stocking and grading

Stocking fry and grading market-size fish are critical steps that traditionally rely on divers or lifting nets, which is slow and can injure fish. The ROV monitors fry distribution and acclimation during stocking and observes net position, fish aggregation and grading results, reducing mechanical damage and stress and improving survival and grading efficiency.

7. Operating offshore aquaculture platforms

Large offshore farming vessels, gravity cages and truss cages operate in deep water with complex structures and demanding maintenance. The ROV periodically inspects the underwater structure, mooring system and submerged passages, assessing corrosion, weld cracks and biofouling, and performs rapid post-storm inspections to keep offshore farms running safely.
