Highlvl Underwater Robots in Environmental Monitoring
Overview
Water quality monitoring solutions: Water is central to the ecosystem, and water quality directly affects ecosystem health, drinking water safety and sustainable development. Underwater environments are hidden, extensive and fast-changing, while conventional monitoring relies on fixed-point sampling and manual surveys with limited coverage, poor temporal and spatial resolution and no access to deep or hazardous areas, so it cannot capture the true state and trends of the underwater environment.
As mobile underwater monitoring stations, ROVs and AUVs overcome the limits of space and depth. Carrying multi-parameter sensors and samplers, they perform in-situ monitoring, underway surveys, pollution source tracing and ecological assessment in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, coastal waters and groundwater systems, moving from point sampling to area sensing and from surface observation to three-dimensional profiling, and providing high-resolution data for targeted pollution control, sound decisions and ecosystem protection.
Core application scenarios
1. Three-dimensional water quality monitoring in rivers, lakes and reservoirs
Water quality in rivers, lakes and reservoirs varies markedly between layers and areas. The ROV follows planned or self-planned routes to monitor water quality on the move at different depths and cross-sections, recording temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, turbidity, chlorophyll, blue-green algae, COD, ammonia nitrogen and other parameters together, and draws three-dimensional water quality maps that reveal hypoxic zones, thermoclines and pollution plumes, filling the spatial gaps left by fixed buoys and manual sampling.
2. Coastal marine environmental surveys
Coastal waters are shaped by land-based inputs, aquaculture, shipping and discharges, so water quality and ecology are complex and variable. The ROV conducts large-scale, long-duration surveys, monitoring temperature, salinity and depth profiles, nutrient distribution, dissolved oxygen saturation and suspended solids; with side-scan sonar and seabed imaging it assesses sediment type, contamination and benthic ecology, providing baseline data for coastal environmental capacity assessment, outfall supervision and evaluation of restoration.
3. Underwater pollution source investigation and tracing
Illegal industrial discharges, leaking sewers and unauthorised aquaculture effluent are hidden and irregular. The ROV patrols along rivers, outfalls and hidden pipes, using HD cameras and water quality sensors to identify abnormal discharge points, pipe damage and black-odour sediment; by tracking the dispersion path and concentration gradient of the plume it helps identify the source and discharge pattern, building an evidence chain for enforcement and targeted control.
4. Groundwater and underground river surveys
Karst underground rivers and groundwater systems are an important part of regional water resources and a potential pathway for pollutants. The ROV enters underground rivers, abandoned mines and drainage culverts that people cannot reach, monitoring groundwater quality, flow velocity and level changes and identifying illegal discharge, hazardous waste burial and cross-aquifer contamination, providing key intelligence for groundwater protection and pollution prevention.
5. Aquatic ecology and biodiversity assessment
The health of the underwater environment must be assessed through community structure, habitat quality and other indicators. With HD cameras, environmental DNA samplers and hydrophones, the ROV conducts long-term in-situ observation and sampling of submerged vegetation, fish communities and benthic habitats without disturbing them, evaluating the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) and giving a scientific basis for environmental flow management, wetland restoration and biodiversity protection.
6. Emergency monitoring of environmental incidents
Chemical spills, oil releases, tailings dam failures and vessel pollution can contaminate water quickly and severely. The ROV reaches the scene first and dives into the core contaminated area and the leading edge of the plume, monitoring pollutant concentration, extent and settling trends in real time; in toxic, flammable or explosive conditions it works in place of people, providing live data for response planning, delineation of the contaminated area and ecological damage assessment.
7. Post-project environmental assessment of water works
Dam construction, channel training and land reclamation have far-reaching effects on underwater topography, hydrology and ecosystems. After the project is operating, the ROV tracks reservoir siltation, downstream riverbed scour, recovery of aquatic vegetation and fish migration routes over the long term, assessing the actual environmental impact and the effectiveness of mitigation measures, and providing objective input for ecological operation and environmental acceptance.
